Riverina Milk
Riverina Milk is the largest, most modern dairy in Australia
The facility
Holstein/ Fresian bred dairy cows, sourced for their production, fertility and structural correctness, spend most of their lactation in the free-stall barns. The last few months before dry off are spent in a traditional pasture phase, resting and building reserves for their next lactation.
The operation includes two separate 60 head rotaries and a 16 head rotary used for recently calved animals and for those animals requiring specialised care.
Much of the roughage fed to the cattle is grown locally and on the property's spray irrigation areas.
The quality and quantity of milk produced by each cow is measured and recorded. Electronic identification also pinpoints cows as they come in season, assisting us to achieve high rates of pregnancy. If a cow suddenly changes its activity levels or its production, it is automatically drafted out for inspection by our experienced staff.
Freshy calved cows are managed separately and treated to extra care and attention. Their calves are given access to natural colostrum to build their immune systems and are hand-reared in dedicated calf sheds until weaning.
We grow large amounts of irrigated pasture, hay and silage for feeding to the cows. Before we use the water for irrigation, it is first used to wash out the free stall barns and the dairy yards.
All our Water is recycled, ensuring we minimise our impact on our river and groundwater supplies. This closed loop is an important part of our sustainable operation.
